چکیده

1. Antipneumococcic serum contains in addition to the antibodies against the various bacterial constituents, a non-antibacterial therapeutic factor. 2. The non-antibacterial factor has been separated from the antibacterial antibodies by absorption with homologous, heat-killed, virulent pneumococci. 3. The non-antibacterial factor is not type-specific; it is probably species-specific; it is not neutralized by concentrated pneumococcus broth culture filtrate. 4. The therapeutic effect of the non-antibacterial factor was demonstrated on the experimental, dermal pneumococcus infection of rabbits; this effect is demonstrable when it is administered per seor in conjunction with a certain subeffective dose of serum. 5. Evidence is presented for the assumption that the ultimate outcome of pneumococcus infection depends to a considerable extent upon this non-antibacterial factor.

The Therapeutic Value of Intramuscular Dosage of Type I Pneumococcus Antisera

1. Intramuscular dosage of antipneumococcus sera in a standard dermal pneumococcic infection in rabbits is as effective as intravenous dosage provided the degree of blood stream invasion be not unusually high. 2. The immediate bactericidal effect of doses of serum given intramuscularly is equal to that of the same doses given intravenously in the cases of mild and moderately severe bacteremias....

A Method of Serum Treatment of Pneumococcic Septicemia in Rabbits

The treatment of pneumococcic septicemia in the rabbits by large doses of immune serum is detrimental, since the serum causes the formation of large clumps of bacteria in the blood which are taken out chiefly by the vessels of the lungs in which they accumulate and impede the circulation. The large doses of serum are also detrimental when they follow upon small ones through which the small clum...

Prevention and treatment of Encephalitozoon cuniculi infection in immunosuppressed rabbits with fenbendazole

This study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of oral administration of fenbendazole (20 mg/kg body weight) prior to and after experimental infection of immunosuppressed rabbits with Encephalitozoon cuniculi. A total of thirty rabbits were divided into five groups: NN (non-immunosuppressed; non-infected), IN (immunosuppressed; non-infected), IPI (immunosuppressed; protected-infected), ITI (...

The Action of a Specific Enzyme upon the Dermal Infection of Rabbits with Type Iii Pneumococcus

The action of the enzyme which specifically decomposes the capsular polysaccharide of Type III Pneumococcus has been tested in Type III pneumococcus dermal infections in rabbits. When injected in sufficient amounts, this enzyme is capable of bringing about a favorable and early termination of the experimental disease which ordinarily is fatal in nearly all instances. The results of the present ...

A Study of the Mechanism of Recovery from Experimental Pneumococcus Infection

A study was made of the blood of cats and rabbits during experimental pneumococcus infection with a view to ascertaining the relationship of acquired immune properties to the mechanism of recovery. Observations were directed chiefly towards the detection of pneumococcidal promoting substances, but the other manifestations of anti-pneumococcus reaction were studied as well. It was found constant...
